The lab proposal was mooted in 2009 after the Bangalore cyber lab, but could not parked due to lack of confidential financial backing and the CPM-led government's reluctance.
The lab has been set up with help from Nasscom will help train police in investigating cyber crimes and will act as a resource centre. "The lab will also have the facilities to clone any hard disk within minutes. It's a giant leap and we are sure cyber crime investigations will speed up," said an officer.
R K Pachnanda, Commissioner of police, said, "At a time when we are receiving an increasing number of cases of bank fraud and hacking emails and profiles in social networking websites, the laboratory will work as a resource centre for our officers. We also have started several training courses for our officers on cyber crime."
Last year, in August 2010, a cyber crime police station was opened at Lalbazar.
